Prosthetics for your Pets

WCBL UNDERSTANDS YOUR PET’S NEEDS

At Westcoast Brace & Limb, we provide the latest advancements in pet prosthetics. Let us help you discover how these life-changing technologies are restoring mobility and independence to all animals.

When an animal is missing a limb, it can have significant effects on their physical and emotional well-being. Physically, missing a limb can affect the animal’s balance, mobility, and ability to perform daily activities such as walking, running, or climbing stairs/ramps. Depending on the limb that is missing, the animal may need to compensate by relying more heavily on their other limbs, which can cause strain and overuse injuries over time, even leading to spinal malities. This can impact their quality of life, as it may be more difficult to perform activities that they once enjoyed.

Emotionally, having a deficit or loss of a limb can have a significant impact on the animal’s mental health. Animals that are missing a limb may feel frustrated or anxious about their reduced mobility, or may display signs of depression. They may also experience a decrease in their self-esteem, being more guarded around other animals. However, with proper care and support, many animals can adapt to their new circumstances and continue to live happy and fulfilling lives.

HOW A MISSING LIMB CAN AFFECT YOUR PET

Reduced Mobility & Balance

Losing a limb can severely limit an animal’s ability to move around and perform basic tasks like walking, running, jumping, and climbing.

Animals missing a limb may be more prone to injuries, such as cuts, scrapes, and bruises, due to their reduced mobility and balance.

Strain on Remaining Limbs

Over time, compensating for a missing limb can cause joint pain and inflammation in the remaining limbs. Scoliosis/kyphosis of the spine can also occur.

Without all four legs to support their weight, animals may develop an uneven or awkward gait that can put additional stress on their remaining limbs and joints.

Behavioral & Emotional Changes

Some animals may become more anxious or aggressive after losing a limb, as they may feel vulnerable or threatened without their full complement of limbs.

Depending on the species and the cause of the limb loss, animals may have a reduced lifespan due to the stress and strain placed on their remaining limbs and significant impact on the animal’s mental health.

HOW A PROSTHESIS CAN HELP YOUR PET

With a prosthesis, normal weight distribution occurs on all legs. As a result, this helps prevent overuse syndrome on the animal’s sound side. Just like each human is different, so is each dog and their amputation.

Each pet is evaluated to determine which prosthetic design would best accommodate their needs and their residual limb. When possible, we use a design that eliminates the need for a harness worn over the back of the pet.

By evaluating your dog in the office, our prosthetists achieve an exact fit for the prosthetic device. Therefore, allowing the best form and most function possible.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR PET RECEIVES A PROSTHESIS

When a pet receives a prosthesis, the assimilation process can take several weeks. This time allows your pet to accept and feel comfortable using the prosthesis. It can eventually become a natural part of the pet’s everyday life. Our specialists can recommend ways to work with your pet at home to help them adjust. Additionally, we can recommend local trainers who will work with your dog to feel comfortable with his or her new prosthesis. Our main goal is to help your pet achieve a pain free and active life and enjoy each of their days to the fullest.

We achieve this goal by offering the latest innovations and technology in pet prosthetics. But, it is not all about the device, it is also about the connection. Our highly skilled and experienced practitioners form a relationship with every one of their patients, human and animal alike. As a result, we are proudly helping “man’s best friend” live their best life!

To ensure every fur baby can receive the care they need, we make every effort to keep our pricing affordable. Our pet prosthetics start at $1300. For specific pricing on custom devices, please contact us directly.
