Patient Spotlight: Charcot-Marie-Tooth AFO Solutions – Bill’s Journey

At the age of twelve, Bill was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, a progressive neurological condition affecting muscle strength and mob

ility. Despite this challenge, Bill stayed highly active. He played various sports in high school, tennis into his forties, and golf into his fifties. Now, at seventy-eight, he continues to prioritize fitness. He strives to walk 5,000 steps daily. As Bill proudly states, “CMT has not slowed me down.” Thanks to Charcot-Marie-Tooth AFO solutions, he remains mobile and independent.

For nearly twenty years, Bill has relied on bilateral Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFOs) to support his mobility. Over time, his condition changed, requiring updates to his braces. Recognizing the need for a new pair, Bill contacted Westcoast Brace & Limb’s Brandon, FL office to start the process.

A Collaborative Approach to CMT

Bill met with clinicians Lauren Bogardus and Walt Raynor, feeling both excited and nervous. This was his first visit with Westcoast Brace & Limb. As an experienced AFO user, he openly shared his history, preferences, and expectations. His goal was to maintain independence and improve daily comfort with the right Charcot-Marie-Tooth AFO solutions.

Together, Bill and his clinical team reviewed past AFO designs. They explored new material options and tested different models to find the best fit. Through diagnostic fittings, precise modifications, and footwear adjustments, Bill received a custom set of AFOs tailored to his needs.

Achieving Mobility Goals with AFO Solutions

The final AFO design provided major improvements, including:

  • Lighter weight for better comfort
  • Simplified donning process with fewer components
  • Increased stability while standing and walking
  • Improved walking speed and efficiency
  • Greater ease in daily activities

Reflecting on his journey, Bill shared, “When I first came to Westcoast Brace & Limb, I was using a cane for balance. Since receiving my new AFOs, I no longer need a cane.” His success with Charcot-Marie-Tooth AFO solutions has helped him continue his active lifestyle.
