Last week Westcoast Brace & Limb invited patients and members of our support group, Amputees Together of Florida, to the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI). Thank you to MOSI for providing complimentary tickets! We all had a blast viewing TheAmazing You exhibit, which includes ‘Mosi Man’, a mannequin that uses multiple prosthetic devices, including a nose, an ear, two prosthetic arms, and two prosthetic legs.
The prosthetics were fabricated by Westcoast Brace & Limb and were donated to the museum in 2008. ‘Mosi Man’ is a great educational tool because viewers can see various prosthetic options available to amputees.
The myoelectric below elbow prosthetic arm is particularly fascinating because viewers can control the operation of the hand. By placing his or her arm in the controller and flexing certain muscles, a viewer operates the prosthesis much like an actual user. After we viewed the entire exhibit, we met together and listened to Mike Knapp, MOSI’s Exhibit Designer, and Greg Bauer, CPO and President of Westcoast Brace & Limb, talk about the exhibit’s evolution and how ‘MOSI Man’ became reality. The food was delicious and, afterwards, we spent plenty of time socializing.
For many of the people who attended the event, this was their first visit to MOSI. I’m glad I was able to be part of it; events like this are fun and help spread limb loss awareness in our community. Thanks to everyone who attended!
