Below the Knee

Posted By admin On February 23, 2011 @ 3:29 pm In | Comments Disabled

Several amputation levels are included in the category of ‘below knee’:

  • Transtibial, through the tibia
  • Symes, through the ankle
  • Partial foot, through the metatarsals
  • Toe amputation

The most important portion of a prosthesis is the socket, which is the component the comes into direct contact with the residual limb.  A socket is fabricated based on a mold of the residual limb.  There are many methods of prosthetic suspension, which is how the prosthesis is held on.

Examples of suspension systems include:

  • Pin locking silicone gel liner
  • Cushion gel liner & suspension sleeve
  • Vacuum pump suction
  • Passive suction
  • Cuff strap
  • Supracondylar

There are a variety of prosthetic feet available, each design recommended based on the user’s:

  • Overall body weight
  • Activity level
  • Stage in rehabilitation
  • Unique anatomy
  • Personal preference

The purpose of a prosthetic foot is to simulate natural movement and absorb shock the upon gait impact.  The majority of prosthetic feet function by mechanical means, but the Proprio foot actually includes microprocesor technology.

For a partial foot amputation, prosthetic options may include:

  • A custom ‘toe filler’ shoe insert
  • A partial foot prosthesis
  • A custom ‘toe filler’ insert that is incorporated into a stabilizing orthotic device
