Lower Extremity Orthotics

A custom orthotic device is fabricated based on a mold, or model, of the user’s affected body part. A mold may be obtained by using one of two methods: physically casting the patient or obtaining detailed measurements. The practitioner then fabricates the orthotic device around the model of the affected body part. Once the device is complete, the practitioner fits the device to the patient.

A custom fitted, pre-fabricated orthotic device is one that is ready to use “off the shelf.” These devices are available in several sizes. They are either kept in stock, or may be ordered following evaluation. During the fitting, the practitioner ensures that the device properly fits and that it addresses the patient’s orthotic needs. If necessary, the practitioner may adjust and/or modify the device.
